Mario Evon 'Back to the Future' at Redbones
Friday March 15th Mario Evon returned to Red Bones Blues Cafe with 'Back to the Future'.
Rain fell all day, mangoes dropped from trees, and panties flew that night. The 'Prince of Reggae-Soul' sailed smooth and easy through Reggae Oldies, Soul favourites and dancehall gems while spicing and blending with some originals from his forthcoming album M.E. On Love.
Always bringing friends and family along; DJ Wayne Greezy selected on the digital wheels of steel; Stratdon warmed the ladies and opened the show; Stephen Madden, Jasmine and Suzanne Tylor lent guest /support vocals, as well as myself The MC... who did exactly that. (speaking in 3rd person?- Yup). All this while the band put it down!
Many thanks to Pree Jamaica and Marcus Golding Photography for these images, see the rest here and here...

Pree Jamaica @ Verse - The Art of Rhyming
Pree Jamaica writes...
On the night of July 26, the amphitheatre of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA) was transformed into the Colosseum for a few hours, as Jamaican hip-hop gladiators Kabaka Pyramid, Five Steez and SHAQ The MC put in solid work at the event titled “Verse – The Art of Rhyming”, which was staged by the Poetry Society of Jamaica in partnership with Manifesto Jamaica.
Unlike the gladiatorial contests of old that pitted combatants against each other, this occasion united three of the island’s elite MCs, who demonstrated the power of rhyme and cast the spotlight on the nexus between poetry and hip-hop.
Their words, sharp and piercing like swords, cut through the night air and elicited positive responses from the appreciable crowd. Steez blasted militant and thought-provoking rhymes like a lyrical Che Guevara in his prime. Kabaka, rocking a military green cap a la Fidel Castro, was in his element as he unleashed bars of fire with assured and understated ease. SHAQ was as smooth at it gets, delivering poignant hooks and getting his message across with slick wordplay and a cool flow.
Much kudos to the Poetry Society of Jamaica and Manifesto Jamaica for giving hip-hop in Jamaica a much needed avenue of expression.

"Verse - The Art of Rhyming" Poetry Society fellowship 26/7/11
On Tuesday July 26, 2011, the Poetry Society of Jamaica partnered with Manifesto Jamaica to present "Verse - The Art of Rhyming" featuring SHAQ The MC, Kabaka Pyramid and Five Steez. I-Nation was on location sharing knowledge, Ibo Provided vege-sip, Clean Fuel Technology had refreshments and ManifestoJA had a book drive throughout the night.
The evening highlighted the connection between poetry and hip hop and excerpts of the Featured Work, Saul Williams' "Dead Emcee Scrolls - The Lost Teachings of Hip Hop" were shared. It was a night filled with lyricism and thought-provoking content, and a thick, very responsive audience.
"Energy, rich lyricism, boldness, presence...all present in the works of Five Steez,SHAQ The MC & Kabaka Pyramid. The poetry is alive and active".
